“Chang Can Dunk”: Director’s Debut Rocks
2023/04/23This is a Disney movie that features a 5-foot-1 Chinese-American high school basketball player who bets his rival that he can dunk to the end of the season. He accomplishes this in about an hour, but there’s a long way to go for Chang, and growth, in a film that believes that maturity is not achieved by taking shortcuts.
The final product marks the debut of screenwriter and director Jingyi Shao who rocks and exemplifies the type of production Disney should do: there are values in the right place, but don’t pretend your hero is perfect.

The role of villain is played by the title character – personified by Bloom Li, who makes us wonder how we feel about Chang. Over time, the obsessive teenager’s personality ends up alienating everyone except demanding single mother Chen, whose tough love only increases her resentment.
At school, Chang can’t stand how others perceive him – as a nerd, who only cares about his drums and basketball. But when new girl Krist (Zoe Renee) shows up, he’s instantly smitten with her, and more than a little desperate to get her attention, he’s annoyed when his childhood friend Matt (Chase Liefeld), now king from the jock squad, shows up and invites her to a party. Given Chang’s short-tempered reactions, Matt has undermined his self-confidence for some time. Chang then fumes, swearing to anyone that he can get a better performance on his vertical jump in 12 weeks.

The director then brings Chang’s second-generation immigrant identity into the mix, drawing on his own Chinese-American heritage. It adds another dimension to the character. Chang has been persecuted for a long time and tends to assume the worst about treating others like him, interpreting racism in what might be called beneficial exchanges. But even in this case, the dynamic is not as simple as in some anti-bullying films. Matt is very popular and handsome and comes from a wealthier background than Chang, but he is not malicious, whereas there is malice behind the way Chang wants to portray him, and both Kristy and Matt’s assistant technology Bo (Ben Wang) realize this.
Dispute
These two encourage their friend early on, helping him find a “coach” – a guy named Deandre (Dexter Darden), who could have turned professional – and making videos that call attention to Chang’s progress. However, once your friend fires the shot, the glamor and attention go to their head, and they quickly resolve that they’ve had enough of “Chang 2.0”. Renee makes Kristy much more interesting than a simple “love interest”; she is nobody’s medal.

Working with Hillman Grad producers Rishi Rajani and Lena Waithe, Shao showcases a complex and sometimes underwhelming protagonist in Chang. Yes, he clearly grabs our sympathies right from the start – the guy is unlucky – but once his ego swells and certain character flaws show themselves, the films force us to see things differently. This is a positive change from other productions; in having a leadership “that pleases” and that produces a richer enigma in general.
After an argument between Chang and Matt, which ended in a physical dispute, the high school principal called his parents, at which point the tense relationship between Chang and his mother – who speaks Mandarin – evolves from a simple subplot to one of the most movie strengths. Until then, Chang has kept Chen out of his affairs, so she is surprised to discover how much of her son’s life she didn’t know.
Chang has a lot of work to do in the second part of the film, and Shao ensures that the character deserves his redemption. So Chang dreams big, but ultimately he has to reach that goal on his own.
