He teamed up again with star Jason Statham for his latest, the absurdly titled but utterly enjoyable “Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre”. According to information from reliable sources, it was filmed during Covid, later retitled, then ripped off the release schedule twice in early 2022 due to fears that Ukrainian thugs looked in poor taste, sold from STX to Lionsgate earlier this year and is now being released, or rather scrapped, a few weeks later – all that hides a fun little romp.
The film avoids the responsibility of trying to compete with the greatness of Avatar: The Way of Water or The Beauty of Pinocchio by Guillermo Del Toro, Ritchie is content to create simple but exciting entertainment that focuses on the main talents of the cast commanded by Jason Statham. He teams up with two other agents (Aubrey Plaza and Mancunian rapper Bugzy Malone) and is sent after arms dealer Greg Simmonds (Hugh Grant) to keep him from falling into even more wrong hands. To help with their target, they enlist Greg’s favorite actor, Danny Francesco (Josh Hartnett), hoping he can help them break into his inner circle.
It’s all silly and refreshing and avoids a brand-irritating, wink-wink conceit that often rubs off on contemporary action films, many of which Statham himself starred in. But it seems that Ritchie’s guiding hand has woken him up a bit, giving his performance a welcome dose of energy.

It might be fun, but it’s Plaza who gets most of our attention, making convincing auditions for her own action franchise, one that might give her a little more to play with. She works hard to elevate her lines, many of which could have been more crisp on the page. But the good time she’s clearly having is increasingly contagious, and while it’s been a pleasure to see her excel in smaller projects, this is a strong move for more successful work.
To be sure, there’s too much going on for the movie to move with the agility it always should. It’s slippery one moment and a little disjointed the next, but Ritchie’s puppy-like insistence that you have as much fun as your stars are hard to resist.
