‘Soul’ finds good allegory for grief, but gets tangled up in mythological exaggeration

2022/11/02

The story shows two friends who are very affected by the loss of the girl they were a trio for, they get together on a bus trip that has a tragic fate. An accident occurs on top of a mountain that instantly kills almost all the passengers. Then, the veil that separates the world of the living from the world of the dead falls for a minute and shows how safe we are not even existing on other planes. This is how we get to know the life of Alma (Mireia Oriol), a young woman who tries to overcome death and finds herself facing a second mourning. Alma forgets who she was, and the series puts her on a journey to recover her memory and at the same time discover why, after the accident, many strange things start to happen.

Soul

The script writer is Sérgio G. Sánchez, a professional of some hits such as: O Impossível (2012) and O Orfanato (2007). ‘Alma’ brings up issues of grief and spirituality, and the script has some apocalyptic elements to sustain a mythology, in a world building that flows along with the resolution of the mystery.

The series seeks in all its 9 episodes the balance between Alma’s journey and the unfolding of this world construction. The direction worked to make all the details of the mythological story understood, but couldn’t avoid the strangeness caused by an emotional sequence being broken with very poorly made appearances of demons and hauntings. But as every production also has its positive side, this one is no different.

What happens to the protagonist, makes the series gain dimension. The discourse of mourning is metaphorically established as an advantage. In the first chapter for example, there are some unfoldings showing the reflections of Alma and Deva in a very beautiful way, but not at all clear. But what awaits us in part of the resolution of this great mystery is more interesting and attractive than you can imagine.

Part 2 of the plot

Not everything in the film revolves around these issues of death, reincarnation, possession and other themes. Deprived of life and the normal process of death, the protagonist faces some of the relevant existential questions that make the narrative more beautiful.

Verdict

The film has its positive points mentioned in this article, but unfortunately it decides to embrace a mixed apocalyptic and mythological plot, which hides the grandiose meanings of the narrative. We hope that the ‘Alma’ series returns understanding the ‘strength of your spirit’.
