What stands out most about this Anime film is not the approach to the familiar concept, but its focus on two extremely current themes: acceptance of each person’s differences and the importance of historical records. Patema Inverted is a sensational adventure with developments that keep us constantly absorbed in the narrative/action and with a pair of protagonists that have great chemistry.
Patema is a young adventurer who lives in an underground civilization, through a network of tunnels. Inspired by an older friend, Patema goes on frequent excursions to explore areas that her civilization considers dangerous. On one of these trips, Patema falls into a huge hole that is connected to the surface. However, in this new world, gravity is completely reversed and Patema begins to fall into the sky. She is eventually saved by Age, a student disaffected by the totalitarian nation where she resides. Together they explore both worlds as they try to unravel the mysteries that connect them.
