2023/03/22The whole premise of the “Pen 15” series felt like a joke. Co-creators Anna Konkle and Maya Erskine, both actresses in their mid-30s, play 13-year-old high school girls in the year 2000, surrounded by real teen actors.
“Pen 15” is a coming-of-age comedy. Still, the issue thrown in there is straightforward, no matter how much the looming possibility that fictional Maya or Anna sharing a first kiss with an actor going through puberty might make you cringe – no. it matters how everything was filmed to protect the innocence of the young actors. The result was a much-recognized first season of discomfort, graced by two of TV’s best and most committed performances.

Second season
This new season picks up where it left off at the end of last season, with Maya (Erskine) and Anna (Konkle) enjoying themselves after a school dance that resulted in an intimate moment with Brandt (Jonah Beres). His attempts, especially Maya’s, to get close to Brandt lead to awkward breaks from the party and a new interest in the house by his parents (Taylor Nichols and Melora Walters), which leads to a quick dalliance with witchcraft – which in my opinion is bad. Along the way, they make a new friend (Ashlee Grubbs ‘Maura), and are plunged headlong into a world of teen theater.
The tendency of wanting to approach the first season was to feel that Erskine and Konkle were doing something that didn’t hold up – the material of an audition reel or a comedy sketch, but it could be that it would be a gimmick that would wear off after a while. an episode or a few.

From Taj Cross as San to Brady Allen’s Brendan and the popular kids who come and go troubling Anna and Maya, it doesn’t feel unnecessarily precocious, and I think the creative team is looking at which of these kids have the potential to carry their own stories.
There’s a sense of confidence that builds on everything in aspects of the Pen 15, which even proves why episodes are clocking in at over 35 minutes at the end of the season. You might not be able to get away from viewing “Pen 15” as puerile, but it’s becoming increasingly easy to see how the series is turning out, along with Netflix’s similar but animated Big Mouth.
