Sebastian Stan and Julianne Moore star in the convoluted thriller Sharper
2023/03/03This pulpy Manhattan-set thriller about confidence tricks and double crosses is a joke at first, and so well-executed that only after a while can you find yourself questioning whether its crazy denouements are plausible. But, I invite you to just relax and enjoy the charisma and sleight of hand embedded in the subtlety of the presentations. The film (directed by Benjamin Caron) mixes five main characters on the board and asks us to guess who is the con artist and who is the focus. Viewers who already know stars Sebastian Stan, Julianne Moore and John Lithgow might be tempted to guess whether they’re playing the good guys or bad guys based on characters they’ve played in the past. But, this can be a pitfall, especially considering how multifaceted each of these actors can be.

Can the viewer trust that your characters are who they say they are? Is Max (Stan) truly a very crazy stoner? Narrative and Cast
There is disorientation and distraction as to the structure of the narrative. The cast is undoubtedly very “tasty” and glamorous. It’s a shame that the final twist is so silly halfway through.
