‘The War with Grandpa’ promises to bring lots of family fun
2022/07/27If you and your family like comedy, you can’t miss the movie ‘At War with Grandpa’. The production shows the story of Peter (Oakes Fegley) and his grandfather Ed, played by Robert De Niro, who have always had a good relationship, but when the grandfather moves in with the family, Peter has to leave his room and go to sleep in the attic. Focused on having his room back, the boy plans traps to expel his grandfather from there, but Ed doesn’t give his arm to twist and they start to get weird.
Based on the book by Robert Kimmel Smith, the story focuses on the family relationship between a grandfather and his grandson.
Peter starts the sixth year at school and faces difficulties in being a pre-teen, such as in school performance and even suffers bullying with colleagues from the most advanced classes. Ed is a very stubborn old man who insists on solving everything in his own way, without recognizing the problems he suffers from old age. Thus, the boy’s mother, played by Uma Thurman, brings Ed, the boy’s grandfather, to live with them, because that way he would be more protected.
As there is no other place for Grandpa to stay, the mother asks Peter to go to sleep in the attic so Grandpa Ed can sleep in his room. However, the boy doesn’t take the situation very well. With that Peter decides to start a prank war so that the grandfather gives up staying in the room, pranks that are full of exaggeration and sometimes in bad taste, which end up reaching the other people in the family.
The film has an ‘air’ of an afternoon session. There is an exchange of confidences between grandfather and grandson so that the story can change over time, bringing the humanization of the conflict between the grandson and the grandfather, who at first treats his attitudes as if it were just a grandson’s joke, but which ends up extrapolating.
The film ends by giving a ‘touch’ to an upcoming battle, showing that they can repeat everything in a sequence for a new ‘war’, but addressing a more sentimental side of the characters, such as attention.
“Em Guerra com o Vovô” does have a lot of repetition of comedy formulas, however, like every afternoon session movie, it gives us that comfort in the midst of so much chaotic news around the world.
The film is directed by Tim Hill of ‘Garfield 2’ and screenwriter of the TV series and films ‘SpongeBob SquarePants’, with a screenplay by Tom J. Astle and Matt Ember. “At War with Grandpa” is already on the best streaming platforms.
